This week the hospitality industry are getting geared up for National Waiters’ Day, a day to celebrate all front of house staff and inspire people about careers in the hospitality sector.

Taking place on June 23, organisers have set up a UK Waiters’ Race, taking place at Brunswick Square, London from 10am. The race invites waiters from all sectors of the hospitality, restaurant and cafe industries to take part and show off their combined skills of elegance, competition and professional skills, by racing while carrying a tray and bottles of water, making sure to keep it all in place for the whole race.

But if you can’t get to Brunswick Square, organisers are encouraging others to hold their own races. Up and down the country, a wide range of venues will host a number of events to celebrate and educate.

National Waiters Day is the brainchild of Fred Sirieix and has been designed to celebrate all front of house staff – whether you are a waiter in a fine dining restaurant, a mixologist or a barista.

The day aims to change the perception of front of house and service as an unskilled job working long hours to a job that offers good skills and can lead to a rewarding career with good progression routes and amazing rewards.

Fred Sirieix, general manager, Galvin at Windows, London Hilton on Park Lane and the inspiration behind the event said: “It has always been my philosophy to work with the best and to do my best always. I believe in hard work and in the beauty of discipline to achieve one’s goal. There has never been a more exciting time to join the hospitality industry, there are opportunities everywhere for those who want them and who are prepared to do what it takes. The idea behind National Waiters’ Day is to bring a spotlight to the hospitality industry and showcase what a great range of exciting careers the industry has to offer, plus we’ll also be having a lot of fun in the process”.
